Retrospect 2012

The “Mariahilferplatz” acts as a centre from where the Murton festival plays along the axis of the river and across it. The daily kick off consists of a series of concerts on the “Mariahilferplatz”, which offers a global musical variety of the finest: from the Balkans to Latin, from Klezmer to Indian tabla sounds – the whole world comes by every day from the 11th to the 18th of August.

The “Mariahilferplatz” is also the starting point for multicultural explorations of the city. The world isn’t just visiting, it is at home at the Murton Festival. There are more than a hundred ethnicities living in Graz and most of them alongside the river Mur – in the districts Lend and Gries.

AMAZING GRAZ – TRIPS AROUND THE WORLD AT YOUR DOORSTEP gives festivalgoers the chance to meet all the different cultures that live in the areas around the Mur and have a sneak in yet unknown worlds of Graz with a guided tour.
Where people meet there is reason to celebrate and dance. The Murton Festival has a lot of reasons to celebrate:

DANCE THE WORLD is visiting various dance floors on the right riverbank. The nights turn into a kaleidoscope of dancing culture, from the PPC to the Postgarage.

The ETHNIC TABLE hosted by Murton is a musical-culinary evening exploring the world of cuisine. Starting at the “Schloßbergplatz” all the way to “Mariahilferplatz” the long table is stretched out for a taste of the world. “Around the world in 8 courses”, so to speak.

On the final weekend, starting on the 18th, the Murton Festival celebrates THE RIVER AT NIGHT in various locations in the districts Lend and Gries. A good night for strolling around Graz and be inspired by its diversity.

The festival comes to an end on the 19th with the literature and film program A LITTLE ALIEN that focuses on the arrival in a new homeland. Every new cultural encounter starts with an arrival. Murton takes the opportunity to look deeper into the issues that people encounter upon entering a foreign country.
